Social Protection Budget 'Not Discussed' Burton

Minister for Social Protection has said Cabinet has not yet discussed the budget for her department as suggestions that €700 million could be cut from the department's budget emerge.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Minister Joan Burton said she would be "very confident" that proposed cuts would not be as extreme as the suggested figure, and said while the Department of Public Expenditure & Reform was going through the details of every department's expenditure ''no decisions, to my knowledge, have been made.''

However, speculation in growing that €700m could be cut from her department in the upcoming budget.

Minister Burton said the department is going to have to trim its spending while reforms to social welfare could follow.

The minister said that there was a possibility of her department limiting social welfare recipients to one payment, but no decision has yet been made.

The Government is planning €3.8bn worth of spending and tax measures in the forthcoming Budget. There will be a €1.6bn adjustment from increased taxation measures, including €1bn from new tax measures.

Spending cuts will account for €2.2bn, including a further €750m reduction in capital spending.
