Prison Population Increases To Over 17,000
A new report by the Irish Prison Service has revealed that a total of 17,318 people were committed to prison in 2011, an 0.8% increase on the total in 2010.
Men made up 86.4% of the total and women 13.6%.
Publishing the Annual Report, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said that the greatest challenge facing the prison service is the increasing number of prisoners being committed to custody.
However, the minister said the latest figures compared with increases of 11.4% and 13.8% in the previous two years.
The report also showed that just under half off all committals were for periods of less than three months, up by 10%.
Prisoners serving sentences between three and five years increased by 12.4%.
And the average cost of a prison space for 2011 was €65,359.

Murdered Prison Officer's Funeral Takes Place Today
The funeral of murdered prison officer David Black is due to take place today. The 52-year-old father of two was shot as he drove to his work at Maghaberry Prison. The shooting occurred on the M1 in County Armagh on Thursday. A private service is to be held at the family home in Cookstown.
