One-Year Jail Term For €18,000 HSE Fraud
A man who fraudulently claimed more than €18,000 from the HSE has been sentenced to 12 months in jail.
Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin said he accepted that Georgian national George Gabodze, 34, had saved the State the expense of a trial by his guilty plea to 21 counts of fraud but he had to mark the seriousness of the offence with a custodial sentence.
“These are very hard-won allowances,” he said. “We can barely pay for them and we have to protect them for those who are entitled to get them and we have to be covetous about them in relation to those who are not entitled to them.”
Det Garda Sgt Malachy White said Gabodze had obtained a false passport in the name of Jan Kucko, a Lithuanian, and used it to claim the money which, because he was a Georgian and thus a non-EU citizen, he was not entitled to claim.
He had since married an EU citizen and wanted to repay the money.

Fachctna Murphy (pictured) has extended his condolences over the recent murder of a PSNI officer in Craigavon on Monday night. Constable Stephen Carroll was part of a team called to deal with a distress call in the Lismore Manor area of Craigavon. He was shot while still in his vehicle by a waiting gunman.

A TEENAGER with intellectual difficulties has been found guilty of killing the pensioner he claimed sexually abused him when he was younger. 19-year-old Brendan McGovern, of Carrigallen, Leitrim, was on trial at the Central Criminal Court, charged with murdering John Golden (76) in Co Cavan on October 6th, 2010.

A man who admitted during counselling sessions that he had abused other children has been sentenced to eight years for the rape and sexual assault of his wife’s 13-year-old niece. The counsellor’s reports also stated that the man claimed the children he had abused “often initiated it and seduced him”.
