4,000 IT Staff To Take Part In Strike Action
Up to 4,000 IT lecturers and researchers are taking part in strike action, it has been announced.
Staff from across the country's 14 Institutes of Technology have staged walkouts today, 03 February due to a number of cutbacks within their sector.
It is understood funding fell by €190 million (35%) between 2008 and 2015 with 535 lecturing positions lost.
However, student numbers have risen by 32% to 21,411.
The Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) said the workload for lecturers has now reached 'unsustainable levels' and staff moral is 'severely damaged'.
TUI President Gerry Quinn said: "Today's strike action has not been taken lightly, and the support of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is hugely significant.
"Despite the ongoing rhetoric about economic recovery, lecturers and students continue to suffer the damage that austerity cuts have wreaked on the education system."
The union is now urging the Department of Education and Skills to hold talks with the organisation on a number of crisis issues.
